Ondrej Mikula was born on July 3, 1988 in Bánovce nad Bebravou in Slovakia. He started playing hockey at Dukla Trencin. He played in teams from the Czech Republic, Finland, Belarus and Kazakhstan. He also played in the Slovak national team under 18 and 20.
